Quad biking guide 2026
From the stone desert of Agafay near Marrakech to the giant dunes of Merzouga and the argan forests of the coast: every Morocco quad biking destination compared by terrain, duration and price, with the practical rules on licences, age and safety.
Few countries offer this much variety to quad riders. Within a single trip you can ride the stone desert of Agafay with the snow-capped Atlas on the horizon, climb the orange sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, and cruise coastal tracks through argan forests near Essaouira and Agadir. All of it is within easy reach of airports served by direct flights from Europe.
Rides last from one hour to a half day, always with a guide leading the convoy, a full briefing and a helmet provided. Operators run formats for every level, from complete beginners to experienced riders chasing technical dunes.

Marrakech is the easiest gateway to quad biking in Morocco. Thirty minutes from the centre, the Agafay desert rolls out stone tracks and arid hills facing the Atlas mountains, snow-capped in winter. This is where most operators are based, with recent fleets and smooth logistics: hotel pickup, briefing, then one to four hours of riding. Browse quad tours in Marrakech or read the full Agafay desert guide.
Merzouga is the ultimate desert ride. The dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 metres, and riding them takes some experience plus a guide who knows the safe lines: this is the most technical terrain in the country. Sunset sessions are unforgettable and often combined with a night in a desert camp. See quad tours in Merzouga, or plan the whole journey with our Morocco desert tours guide.
The coast offers a different playground: dunes by the ocean, argan forests, wild beaches and dry riverbeds. The sea breeze keeps rides pleasant even in summer, when the inland desert is too hot. Count 35 to 70 euros for one to two hours, hotel transfer often included. See quad tours in Agadir and quad tours in Essaouira.
No driving licence is required on the private tracks and desert circuits used by tour operators. Most rides are beginner-friendly after a short initiation. To drive solo you generally need to be 16 to 18; children join as passengers from 6 to 8 years old. Helmets are provided, a guide always leads, and a deposit of 200 to 500 MAD is blocked on your card. Travel insurance covering motor sports is recommended.
The Agafay stone desert, 30 minutes from Marrakech, is the most accessible spot for a real desert ride without a long transfer. For spectacular sand dunes, Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is unmatched but sits 9 to 10 hours from Marrakech, so it is usually part of a desert tour. Agadir and Essaouira combine coastal dunes with an ocean breeze, pleasant even in summer.
Expect 35 to 90 euros per person (380 to 980 MAD) depending on duration and destination. A one-hour ride near Marrakech costs around 40 to 55 euros. A half day with a tea break in a Berber village runs 70 to 90 euros. Sunset rides on the Merzouga dunes are among the most popular premium options.
No. Tour operators use private circuits and desert tracks where no driving licence is required. Every ride starts with a 5 to 10 minute briefing, a helmet is provided and mandatory, and a guide leads the convoy. A deposit of 200 to 500 MAD is usually blocked on your bank card at departure.
To drive solo, most operators ask for 16 to 18 years depending on the engine size. Younger children can ride as passengers behind an adult or an instructor, generally from 6 to 8 years old, with an adapted helmet. Some bases also offer supervised mini-quads for kids.
October to April for the desert spots (Agafay, Merzouga, Ouarzazate), when temperatures are comfortable. May to September works well on the coast (Essaouira, Agadir), cooled by the ocean breeze. Avoid July and August in the deep desert, where it reaches 40 to 45°C. Sunrise and sunset rides offer the best light.
